Eastshore League Annual Solo & Ensemble Festival The Eastshore League is comprised of 10 east side King County Middle Schools. A different school hosts this annual festival each year. It takes place in March. Music Teachers and Professional Musicians who are specialists on their particular instrument judge the Festival. Students are asked to select quality music for either solo or ensemble during November (Mr. Dungey and/or their private music teacher will be able to help guide a student to the appropriate choice of music.) Soloist students must have a piano accompaniment; at least 2-3 practices should be scheduled prior to the Festival. Students will perform for the adjudicators and be rated on the quality of the music and their performance during 10-minute time slots throughout the day. There are no limitations on the number of entries students can participate in, however Mr. Dungey recommends not more than 4 entries per student, which can include duets, trios, quartets and mixed ensembles. A rating of their performance will be assigned on a scale of 1-3 with a 1 being the best rating for fewest mistakes and highest musical quality. (1=Superior, 2=Excellent, and 3=Good.) Students are adjudicated only within their instrument group. This is not competitive. The students are judged with a criteria and are not graded against each other or between grade levels so it is possible for all students to receive a 1 rating which is considered to be a superior performance. By the end of the day written adjudication forms will given to Mr. Dungey. He will return these to the students on the following Monday. This Festival provides a positive format for every student to receive feedback and have an opportunity to hear other students from other schools throughout the day. (However, students are not required to stay beyond their 10-minutes performance time, their 10-minute warm-up time and the 10-minute observation time preceding their performance.) Students are encouraged and welcome to participate but this not required. All students will be provided assistance and class time to prepare that are in ensembles.

Wiki Page: Private Lesson Information
Private lessons are encouraged for students to ensure success with proper tone production, technical facility and a higher level of enjoyment for playing. Students in private lessons provide the proper modeling of instrumental performance while participating in the school program and usually perform at a higher level of performance than students without lessons. Students will benefit from their lessons as they set goals with their instructor that will include participation in solo festivals and auditions for chair placements in class and for honor groups in the community. They also benefit when remedial instruction is necessary to maintain playing skills for classroom goals while providing additional motivation and encouragement. Private instructors provide continuity with the school program as well as helping with personal goals for each student. Every student should expect to prepare weekly assignments for their instructor. Assignments will include instruction in tone production, technical facility, reading skills, solo literature, review of classroom assignments from school and preparation for any chair placement or honor group auditions. Information Provided by Private Instructors * List of solo pieces or collections for beginning, intermediate or advanced playing. * List of recording artist with discography information for purchase. * Recommended custom mouthpiece and instruments for advancing playing. * List of recommended accompanist for recitals at solo festivals. * Written explanation of proper tone production and formation of a proper embouchure. Wiki Page: Solo & Ensemble Expectations
STUDENTS: Practice 4 days a week at home. Students playing a solo with an accompaniment part should schedule at least 2-3 practices with a piano accompanist before the day of the contest. All ensembles should schedule at least 5-6 practices with all other members of their ensemble before the contest at someone’s house or schedule before or after school times in the music rooms. All soloist and ensembles must provide a separate fresh copy of the music for the judge on the day of the contest. Everyone should be in their assigned performance room 10 minutes before playing and be ready ahead of schedule. (Arrive earlier to warm-up in the Gym.) Students should wear their nicest clothes for the contest. Students should introduce themselves, the school they attend, their accompanist if using one, and the title of the song and composer before beginning their performance. Always wait for approval by the judge before starting your presentation. Students should conduct themselves at the Festival with the utmost respect for the judge, the guest facility, and the other performers. NO running, loud conversations or gum is permitted while in the building. Absolutely no talking in any of the performance rooms. All large instrument cases are to be left in the assigned school storage area during performances and must have a nametag with the student’s name and the school they attend. PARENTS: Please provide arrangements and transportation so ensemble members can meet together to practice after school hours or on weekends for 2-3 rehearsals. (Students should exchange phone numbers.) Review expectations with daughter/son and provide support for participation. Copy one original piece of music for judges and put school name on copy at the top of the music. Provide transportation to the Festival location. Arrange for payment of contest fee by check made payable to Pacific Cascade Middle School. If you or your student have any problem meeting these expectations, please contact Mr. Dungey in advance to make alternate arrangements so your student and those in his/her ensemble (if applicable) do not receive a zero on this assignment. This Festival provides an excellent opportunity for your student to receive positive feedback, develop individual confidence, and become a good performer. Exact dates, times, additional expectations and other information or changes will be sent home closer to the Festival.

Blog Post: Note about Renting vs. Buying
Hello Band Families! For beginning band students, I strongly encourage renting an instrument vs. buying one. Here are some reasons why: Students are learning to care for the instrument and usually rentals can be repaired by the shop for no cost. Students can end up switching instruments in or after their first year. Parents often look for the cheapest instrument they can find; the quality of a rental is FAR better than they would buy. Lower quality instruments make it more difficult to play and cause frustration, lowing the enthusiasm level for learning. Shop costs to repair inferior instruments can quickly exceed the cost of the instrument and some shops won't work on them because they cannot guarantee that the repair will not fail.

ISSAQUAH SCHOOL DISTRICT DISCLAIMER The following list of individual(s)/agencies is being provided as an informational item for your convenience. The Issaquah School District does not recommend or endorse any of these individual(s)/agencies provided and will not be held liable or responsible for any services provided by them. As such, the Issaquah School District highly recommends that you conduct your own research and investigation and exercise due diligence before selecting any of these individual(s)/agencies for services. All students are encouraged to have a private instructor after school in addition to daily class instruction. The instructors will be teaching after school at the Pacific Cascade Campus Music Facility. Personal arrangements for alternative locations with instructors can also be arranged. This allows student to have additional help for any personal challenges with playing an instrument or to enhance their daily progress for ensured success. This is not a requirement for students to be in the School Music Program but students that study privately in addition to class have traditionally excelled in performance on their selected instrument. The rates are approximately the same for all the teachers and checks for payments are due to the instructors prior to the start of lessons each month for the entire month. Checks are made payable to the selected private teacher. Make ups for missed lessons will be arranged with your private teacher not through the classroom teacher. Lessons will begin in September. The number of lessons for each school month is determined by the private instructor at the time that you would like to request to get started. Be sure to contact each teacher personally ASAP to RSVP. Accompanists for Students Playing Solos at Festival ISSAQUAH SCHOOL DISTRICT DISCLAIMER The following list of individual(s)/agencies is being provided as an informational item for your convenience. The Eastshore Music Educators that host the Festival each year feel it is important that students playing solos should have a qualified accompanist. The accompanist provides professional support for the student during their performance as well as enriches the experience for the soloist and everyone listening. As students progress into the High School Festivals it becomes a requirement at Festival to have an accompanist. Students are eligible to be selected to compete at the W.M.E.A. State Contest as early as their 9th grade year. The earlier preparation of working with an accompanist during the middle school years ensures a higher level of success in performance for their entry year in high school. The value of having an accompanist ensures that students are able to perform with the best possible support and understanding of tempo and style. 7th and 8th graders are expected to have an accompanist even though it is not absolutely required for participation. Private Piano Accompanist Please call and ask each accompanist about their rates and location to accompany your student. All fees should be paid directly to the Accompanist. ("Usually you arrange for 2 rehearsals prior to the performance and the performance as part of the total fee. Fees usually run from $50.00-$80.00. This should be considered a bargain since the accompanist spends time learning the music as well as time spent for the 2 rehearsals and performance. Some may charge by the hour? Please provide the accompanist a copy of their part as soon as possible for preparation prior to the 1st scheduled rehearsal.")
