Eastshore League Annual Solo & Ensemble Festival The Eastshore League is comprised of 10 east side King County Middle Schools. A different school hosts this annual festival each year. It takes place in March. Music Teachers and Professional Musicians who are specialists on their particular instrument judge the Festival. Students are asked to select quality music for either solo or ensemble during November (Mr. Dungey and/or their private music teacher will be able to help guide a student to the appropriate choice of music.) Soloist students must have a piano accompaniment; at least 2-3 practices should be scheduled prior to the Festival. Students will perform for the adjudicators and be rated on the quality of the music and their performance during 10-minute time slots throughout the day. There are no limitations on the number of entries students can participate in, however Mr. Dungey recommends not more than 4 entries per student, which can include duets, trios, quartets and mixed ensembles. A rating of their performance will be assigned on a scale of 1-3 with a 1 being the best rating for fewest mistakes and highest musical quality. (1=Superior, 2=Excellent, and 3=Good.) Students are adjudicated only within their instrument group. This is not competitive. The students are judged with a criteria and are not graded against each other or between grade levels so it is possible for all students to receive a 1 rating which is considered to be a superior performance. By the end of the day written adjudication forms will given to Mr. Dungey. He will return these to the students on the following Monday. This Festival provides a positive format for every student to receive feedback and have an opportunity to hear other students from other schools throughout the day. (However, students are not required to stay beyond their 10-minutes performance time, their 10-minute warm-up time and the 10-minute observation time preceding their performance.) Students are encouraged and welcome to participate but this not required. All students will be provided assistance and class time to prepare that are in ensembles.
